A specialist in serious crime, both defending and prosecuting. Also has a discrete specialism in licensing with broad experience of Licensing Act 2003 hearings before sub committee, magistrates and in the Crown Court. He has recently been instructed in cases involving the regualtion of Food Safety.
He has appeared in a range of serious cases including murder, organised fraud against credit card companies, conspiracies to supply large quantities of controlled drugs, smuggling of cigarettes and drugs. He is regularly instructed in matters of serious sexual offences particularly sensitive cases involving the alleged abuse of children.
A particular expertise is in offences under the Road Traffic Acts where he has both prosecuted and defended several charges of causing death by dangerous driving. He appeared in the leading authority on sentencing in such cases of R -v- Richardson and others 2007 CrApp R(S) 211.
He has extensive experience of military law and service discipline. He is regularly instructed to appear for the defence in court martial at home and abroad. He has taken defence cases to the Courts Martial Appeal Court and to the House of Lords. He has successfully represented clients seeking redress against administrative decisions of the military authorities. He has appeared on several occasions for the Service Prosecuting Authority in the Courts Martial Appeal Court. Issues he has argued have included the definition of firearms and application of civilian legislation to the military in terms of procedural and substantive law. He has written on the court martial system in 'Appeals Against Court Martial Sentences - Has Anything Changed ?' (1999) Crim LR 480 and 'The Armed Forces Act 2006 - Civilianising Military Justice ?' (2008) Crim LR 191.
